Marking effectively and creating a feedback dialogue

MAKING MARKING EASIER



Ooh - very excited.  Highlighters for marking.  What a revelation and one of those lightbulb moments.  Not that it's a new concept, but very little in teaching is truly new.  It goes back to the ideas of pupils correcting their own work - I know, what a shocker!  This time, though, I'm using highlighters.  "Beat the blue" means that the pupils have to work out what the problem is.  Obviously you need to know what they should be able to work out and what they will need support with.  Then I ask them why I've changed something and they reply, in another colour of course - probably purple... And bingo!  A feedback dialogue is created.

Beautiful.

Add pictures of highlighters with cats on and I am very happy - and add a few stickers with target language (mach blau besser!/ bats le bleu!/accion azul!) and SLT are even happier.  And what about green for fab work? (Gruen ist gut!/vert pour le victoire!/verde vuele!)

Now I am a very happy bunny and my pupils' books are decidedly more colourful!

CREATING A FEEDBACK DIALOGUE



Feedback dialogues are definitely the way forward and discussion is intense about how best to do this.  So, what do we want from it?  Surely we want to see that the pupils are engaging with all our wonderful, insightful and edifying comments...
So how to do this?  Our book monitoring today gave us some lovely ideas, so thanks Mrs H, for your fab examples:


Wonderful feedback conversation, demonstrating that the pupils understand what they've done wrong and using their beautiful purple pens to correct their mistakes.

In the mad scramble to prepare our pupils for their speaking exam this year, I'm sure we've all felt like we are going to lose some (or ourselves)! I have made a booklet that will help them to write their own independent answers for questions based on the AQA specification. Wow - it's been a while!  So I have had my head down and hardly looked up for several years (!) So the spark seems to be back and I'm deep in MFL-based reading and research before it can wear off again! AND IT'S ALL ABOUT THE SPEAKING AT THE MOMENT!!! Speaking in the MFL classroom is something that is close to our heart in our department and something that we're pulling out all the stops to increase and improve.  We're initially going for quantity and we'll worry about the quality along the way. All my classes are busy preparing and using questions and answers for their current topics.  They have all been supplied with super-exciting card (folded and cut into 8 cards) and have got 8 questions and answers. The game that they play with their partners involves putting the cards together, shuffling them and then asking each other the questions.  If their partner needs to read the answer from their book, they can do that and the card goes to the bottom of the pile.
