Fab Language Treasure Hunt and Grammar Scrapbook - End of Term special!

We had a fantastic Year 9 options day at school and I had my new Year 10 GCSE German class ALL DAY!  Luckily, Mrs H and I got our heads together and managed to come up with some lovely activities.  The one I'm going to share here is the treasure hunt idea.


I designed and made 12 "grammar postcards" using vintage posters and adapted them so that they displayed examples of six tenses and six word order elements in German (most are on my Twitter feed under "German Teaching") or I'm happy to email out the word document ready to print with all postcards.

The girls trekked around the school collecting their postcards following their target language clues.  Once they had finished they returned to the room.  Then started the crafty bit...

Each girl was given 6 pieces of card (roughly A5 sized) and they taped these in a long row using fabric tape (a bit like duct tape but a lot cheaper from Homebase).  They left a gap between the cards of about a finger's width to create a "hinge".  They then used lovely pretty wallpaper (thanks again, Homebase!!!) to decorate their scrapbook.

So, back to the grammar: once their books were ready, they had to sort the grammar postcards into two groups (someone eventually spotted the tense/word order groups, thank goodness!)

Then, they glued all the tense postcards one side and the word order postcards the other side.

Finally, they were all given callout sheets and we discuss what they would need to add to each postcards so that it would make sense. next year when they come to use their scrapbooks to support their work.

I was thrilled to see that the girls loved the activity and have voluntarily spent extra time finishing off their "grammar scrapbooks".

A lovely way to welcome the last few weeks of term with some renewed enthusiasm from my girls and even a little regret from those that didn't opt for it - good news all round!!!

Wow - it's been a while!  So I have had my head down and hardly looked up for several years (!) So the spark seems to be back and I'm deep in MFL-based reading and research before it can wear off again! AND IT'S ALL ABOUT THE SPEAKING AT THE MOMENT!!! Speaking in the MFL classroom is something that is close to our heart in our department and something that we're pulling out all the stops to increase and improve.  We're initially going for quantity and we'll worry about the quality along the way. All my classes are busy preparing and using questions and answers for their current topics.  They have all been supplied with super-exciting card (folded and cut into 8 cards) and have got 8 questions and answers. The game that they play with their partners involves putting the cards together, shuffling them and then asking each other the questions.  If their partner needs to read the answer from their book, they can do that and the card goes to the bottom of the pile.
